We all do things so differently it's probably best to let this be open-ended and whatever you want to write about this year.

I wrote down some things, will link if anyone cares to read it. Things I've learned from this year of giving up on everything telly that isn't Thai
Part 2
here because I forgot some of the more important things.

12 x 45 minutes available on iQiyi to subscribers OR you can see the first two episodes on youtube here and episodes 3-12 here on Dailymotion. Scroll to the bottom of the page.

Dr. Prakan (Nut Nutchapon Rattanamongkol) is a surgeon at a hospital he co-owns due to inheriting the shares from his parents. He's got a lot of problems on his plate, including his cousin Metha (Sood Yacht Patsit Permpoonsavat) who he's in competition with to become the head of surgery which would be bad enough but Metha also thinks the female doctor he pines for, Nuch (Cookkai Pavadee Komchokpaisan), is in love with Prakan. Metha appears to be the only one amongst the doctors and nurses who doesn't know Prakan is gay.

More information about the plot under here if you want it )
I like that this BL canon is about more than the romantic relationships because of the Grim Reapers and some musings on the meaning of life and death. Considering the subject matter, it's surprisingly sweet at times with an interesting backstory involving why Prakan is the only human who can see the Grim Reapers. It has a secondary BL couple as well.

One of the major differences I've noticed between Western dramas and Asian dramas involving immortal characters in relationships with mortal characters is - hmmm, is this a spoiler? It might be seen as as spoiler so under the cut it goes *while Western ones tend to solve it by making the mortal character immortal, the Asian ones go more for them both staying the same and just having to deal with the ageing process OR turning the immortal mortal * and I find this fascinating.

For those who need to know how it ends, *It's appropriately bittersweet but with a bright outlook for the future.*

Yes, I ship Praken/Tua Phee. Try to act surprised I'll wait. ;D

OST from Channel 3 lakorn Matalada. Het romances, 3 lakorn-trope wealthy dysfunctional families, and the FL's - drag performers with big, welcoming hearts, who accumulate stray neighbours, grand/parents and refugees from the lakorn-dysfunctional families. There's also a stray dog and her puppies who are central to the early plot but they live with the ML. This OST from Mata's dad, Pa Grace, played and sung by Chai Chatayodom.

Enigma

I started watching Enigma a couple of weeks ago, but then I had a busy schedule between work and two workshops I enrolled in (one voluntarily, and a mandatory one). Fortunately, I finished one last saturday and I feel like I can start breathing (and watching shows) again. So, I just finiched watching it last wednesday.

I usually don't watch horror stuff because I'm a crybaby and, not gonna lie, it has moments that sacred me a lot because they were pretty graphic, but I really liked the story. It was very intriguing and I definitely wanted to binge watch it when I started it.

I immediately loved Fa and I felt heartbroken for Namsine. And despite liking Ajin, I would have liked to know more about him, although I admit his character being mysterious works just fine for the story.

I suffered a lot during the first part of the last episode and at some point I thought it was going to be too much for me but I kept watching and everything worked out in the end. I can even see my self rewatching it.

Something I didn't enjoy at all and almost made me stop watching it was the Harry Potter reference... I am tired of Harry Potter references.

Since a couple of months ago (maybe more... half a year?) I make threads with my reactions to series I watch. I did it with A Tale of Thousand Stars and Moonlight Chicken, just to mention the Thai ones but, as I said in the first line of this post, I haven't had much time lately and my day off was in the middle of the week, so I preferred just watching instead of stopping to write, specially because it was a bit late.

Anyway, I'm glad I watched it because it wasn't BL and I feel like yes, despite me wanting to watch more Thai BL to expand my BL knowledge, I'm not opposed to watch other kind of shows as long as they're interesting. And this one was. Thank you for the rec, [personal profile] elisheva_m

(Not going to try to do this for BL or het because there are so many, or the small GLs)

The Loyal Pin
Historic romance.

Mom Pet Sawan
Thai PBS. Historic. Maybe they're starting filming now? It will be awhile before it airs and likely awhile longer before it gets English subs (Eng subs my speculation based on what Thai PBS has been doing re subs + the attention GL is currently getting). But I'm so happy Thai PBS is doing this.

Whether it's not yet aired or just something you haven't gotten around to yet, what series, movies or lakorns are you looking forward to?

The Secret of Us. It's lesbian. It's Channel 3. It's LGBTQ+ lakorn. My favourite actress Prigkhing is in it. Orm Kornnaphat too. Loved her takes no shit tomboy character in Matalada. She seems to be playing more femme in this though. But still it's Orm :)

Kroo Baan Nok (To Sir, With Love) Film about a teacher sent to an underprivileged community in Issan province. Finally found it, wasn't expecting subs so not disappointed that way. Now I just need the concentration to try to follow it raw.

The Cursed Land
Not keen on horror in general, though I tend to do better with Thai. For Ananda Everingham and Jennis Oprasert, who was so good in The Broken Us, I will brave it.

Present, Perfect short film by Nattawut Poonpiriya whose work I've seen so far is good enough I ration it :)   [It is excellent. Highly recommended. Link here

My Precious series-edit - adaptation of a (semi-?)autobiographical coming of age Taiwanese novel. Unknowingly watched the movie edit first so half of me thinks I should wait to forget more of it and part of me says but it was so much fun. Nanon, Film, Ohm, Neo, Chimon, View, Euro, Drake.

Junk Mail my next on Thai PBS that I keep not getting around to. Need to just start it now that English subs are up.

What are you looking forward to?

Sweet Sensory has a season 2!!!! It's just completed airing. Now to wait for subtitles.

14 x 45 minutes, it can be watched on WE TV, BiliBili and Dailymotion.

WARNING: This show is pretty violent and while certainly equal opportunity to a large degree, it does contain violence against and the sexual abuse/exploitation/coercion of women. I would rate the intensity of what you see on screen as being at a level that would be regularly seen on US broadcast television but far nastier things are talked about/suggested. Also, if abortion is a topic you prefer to avoid altogether this show is not for you (it's a very small part of the plot and not unsympathetic in portrayal). If you want/need more information, please ask and I'll put it under a spoiler cut in my comment response to you.

Dr. Bunnakit 'Bun' (Tul Pakorn Thanasrivanitchai) is a medical examiner based at a provincial hospital. After carrying out an autopsy on the body of a woman who had seemingly hanged herself, Bun's findings point to homicide. All clues point to one suspect, a man named Tan (Max Nattapol Diloknawarit) who denies any involvement, a man Bun drunkenly forced a kiss on in a nightclub when he'd newly arrived in town.

This is the type of thing I'm always on the look out for, a canon BL series where the murder mystery and not the romance is the main subject of the story. While it has a few twists and turns, it's not the most complicated plot I've ever seen, relying heavily as it does on red herrings and character actions that could be open to a wide range of interpretations at the time... or at least that's what I thought until the plot unexpectedly turned positively Shakespearean tragedy on my arse. Blimey! *shudders*

Nearly all of the cast are wonderful in their roles and the leads have great chemistry which is probably due in part to the fact that Tul and Max are friends and have starred in 9 different Thai dramas together, all LGBTQ+ themed.

gifs under here )

IF you can deal with the warnings up above, I'd recommend it if you like some plot with your canon BL and/or enjoy murder mysteries and would love to have a BL couple at the centre of it for a change (there's also a younger BL couple and another older one that appears to be forming) *g*

I'm throwing this extra publicity photo in because I can... You're welcome! ;D )

The Broken Us, 2022  12 episodes

A single event brings four strangers into each other's lives. They're all very different and struggling with their own concerns, which leads to friction as well as understanding.

This gentle lakorn takes on serious, heavy issues and wraps them in warmth and kindness. It's about friendship, acceptance and helping each other. It is beautifully done, from the gentle acoustic closing song to the quirky coffee shop with Mackintosh metalwork to the care that's taken with the progression of the characters' growth individually and in their friendships.

The characters feel real and believable, especially the four central ones, along with the issues they face and the changes they make in their lives. All in all, this is one of the most emotionally satisfying series I've seen.

On Thai PBS with English subtitles.

The Library, written and directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya. Available here, 31 minutes

The story for this is rich enough it could easily have been made into a full length film or series.

It would have been less if it had. The acting and directing are exquisite. They convey everything they need to tell this story through a look, or a few words. Together, this richness and brevity make for an emotionally powerful story. There is nothing extraneous to dilute its impact.

Cinematography and music complement it well, making the perfect atmosphere.

Cannot recommend this one highly enough. It is quietly, gently, heartbreakingly beautiful.

May Who?

Watched this at a time when I was struggling with words so I didn't get anything down. I loved it though, exactly my type of warm, goofy coming-of-age movie with good characters, genre-borrowing that becomes its own lexicon, and told with the open-hearted, generous humour which infuses many Thai comedies. Will certainly return to it.

Khun Chai (To Sir, With Love) 2022, 17 episodes

Parents having to deal with and overcome cultural homophobia are at its core, and there's a beautiful romance between men, but it's more of a story about very determined women using whatever resources they can find to negotiate life within the constraints of cultural sexism. Li is ferociously strong, Jia's knowledge of herbs is magic, Chan is whatever the moment needs, and sometimes that's a touch of comic relief, Bua's strength is in her gentleness, Pin is plucky and resourceful, Cai is always paying attention.

It's melodrama so everything is exaggerated. Settle into its rhythms, it's a wild, captivating ride and well worth it.

Stay, 2015, 4 episodes (ask me for a link to fansubs which have fortunately kept this gem still available)

An inquisitive, full of life young Thai woman ends up in Japan on her own and not knowing the language. The family at the farm where she'll be living and working for three weeks is warm, kind and welcoming. Two more show up and cause a bit of chaos. There's a fair bit of sightseeing and a lot of food, some out at markets and restaurants but the most memorable are at home amongst this found family.

Everything is balanced. Jook's vitality, Mee's calm steadiness; uncle Hattori's mischievous grin, his daughter Naomi's gentleness; difficulties when there isn't a shared language, the ways they find around that. All of the characters are well thought out and portrayed. They're each distinct in personality but fit together well. It's a lovely group of people to spend time with.

It's a quiet series, which might disappoint some. The emotions aren't big or dramatic, they're just very real.
