I'd love to find others to talk about Thai culture, language, dramas and more. I got hooked on Thai series last year so most of my learning starts with questions about things I see in them. Everyone is very welcome to join, whatever your level of interest or knowledge is.

Community guideline is: Be curious, be kind.
Please post or comment somewhere to introduce yourself :)

There aren't many with similar interests here but I thought I'd start a community which could serve as a gathering place and encourage others to join or stay. To start with, this community will allow comments from anyone. If you've found this via internet search and you'd like to get involved please consider registering a free dreamwidth account. Dreamwidth is a user-supported site with good privacy options.

As a way of generating content for however long it's just me talking to myself, I'll collect useful links on Thai language and culture. Also Ost videos from Thai series as some have been really helpful in teaching my ears how to hear the language.

I'm not good at writing reviews or recommendations; if I really love something I don't want to give anything away so I'm inclined to gush vaguely and want people to go find out/decide for themselves. Will try though.

If this community goes quiet, it just means I'm taking a break from talking to myself. Please comment even if a post has an old date, or join and start a conversation.

Hi! Here's the monthly chat thread.

Here's the monthly chat thread. It's a year since I started the comm.
elisheva_m: Nak and Mak are seated on a wooden platform outdoors. They wear rural clothing of the time, two pieces of cloth strategically wrapped as top and skirt for Nak and just one for Mak. (Thai film)
[personal profile] elisheva_m
Anyone here on Signal? Would you like a sticker pack of Thai actors? My first one includes a Nak & Mak (Sine Inthira and Winai Kraibutr), Drake, Ciize and Fiat (Cause He's My Boy & OST); Piploy, Puimek, Nanon and Kay in 55:15; Mai & Bright in Astrophile, Orm as feisty takes no shit tomboy Riri in Matalada (not the high maintenance infantile characters Ch 3 has moved her into); two of First and two of Khaotung (Your World My World and Let's Try videos); Force and Book from ABAAB and My Luck OST. Nearly all are from OST videos and are either a happy smile or an emoji substitute like a wave or some comically serious side eye.

I can post a link here if anyone's interested and let you know when I finish more. Next will be about 9 each from The Shipper OST (Jennie Panhan, First, Prighkhing, Piploy, Fluke Pusit) and the lovely video Ch 3 made for Matalada's OST with some of the cast and many others signing the lyrics. Will get around to Moonlight Chicken (how could I not?), He's Coming to Me (the boys have such expressive faces) and the Half Naked Mak Pack I promised a dear friend, which is what started this. That will be a lot of rewatching things I've rewatched recently though so it might be a wee while unless someone motivates me. Any interest?

Thai words and names can be compounded from shorter words, so if you know some basics you can work out the meaning of many more.

Two ways to say congratulations in Thai:

ดีใจด้วย dee jai duay

ยินดีด้วย yin dee duay

ดี dee means good, ใจ jai is heart, emotion, feeling, ยิน yin means to feel

ดีใจ dee-jai/dii-chai = happy

ยินดี yin-dee = happy

ด้วย duay = also, too, together with

So these phrases express happiness for/with the one(s) you're congratulating.
And, as always with Thai, add the appropriate particles at the end, นะ na to soften it and/or คะ kha or ครับ khap to make it polite.

ดีใจด้วยคะ Thailand on bringing in marriage equality <3

All the steps have been completed, passing by huge margins in both lower and upper houses of government, and 120 days since the royal faffing about to make it official and legal.
Thailand finally has marriage equality!!!

All references to husband and wife in the legal code have been changed to spouse. Same sex couples are able to adopt children now too.

Congratulations - ดีใจด้วย dee jai duay
ยินดีด้วย yin dee duay
(plus ค่ะ kha (if you're a woman) or ครับ khap (male) at the end to make it polite)

While acknowledging that many of our comm members prefer a higher level of stress and tension in their dramas and I'm not well suited to recommending those - if anyone's looking for something less so just now, this is my speciality.

Thais series and movies can be excellent at surrounding big emotions with warmth, kindness and care. If you have the bandwidth for an hour or 12 of that, it's good medicine.

As absoluteBL phrased it on tumbler:
"Thailand's quintessential softness around theme and character.... Thailand will never lose this soft style and it's one of the most attractive qualities of Thai BL: it's never very harsh with us or its characters."
(thanks to kat_lair for the link)

Or maybe there's a series or movie you find comforting you'd like to suggest to me and others?

Looks like January is a busy time for dreamwidth with a lot of social and community-building things to do elsewhere.

Here's the monthly chat thread.

We all do things so differently it's probably best to let this be open-ended and whatever you want to write about this year.

I wrote down some things, will link if anyone cares to read it. Things I've learned from this year of giving up on everything telly that isn't Thai
Part 2
here because I forgot some of the more important things.

Sorry, I didn't realise that I hadn't posted the monthly chat thread. Here it is. You don't have to wait for me to remember though, anyone can start it.

(And then I forgot to change the to... so it went in my own journal. Face palm. Anyway. I hope your month is going better than this.

Fandom: A Tale of a Thousand Stars (2021)/Our Skyy 2 eps 14-16 (2023)
Characters/Pairings: Chief Phupha Viriyanon/Tian Sopaditsakun
Warnings/Spoilers: None

Finally I got around to making icons for this beautiful, romantic Thai series and while searching for images I discovered they had recently filmed a sequel as part of a series called Our Skyy 2 (link goes to all the episodes but the 1000 stars episodes are 14-16). Of course I could not resist watching and loving these extra moments with Phupha and Tian :)

Tonight is the holiday of Loy Krathong, the evening of the full moon in the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar. It's a picturesque celebration, with small containers carrying a lit candle and incense floated out onto a body of water, so it's often used in Thai series. Episode 3 of Moonlight Chicken is especially memorable for that, if anyone wants to see it in series context.

Have you seen Loy Krathong in anything you've watched?

With the subject being such a minor interest for most of the members, trying to figure out how to best run the comm has been difficult. This summer someone more experienced with dreamwidth assessed that just the chat thread was best for the size of the group, so I went with that. But then there was a lot of activity on the spooky recs for Halloween post and some quick responses to a later post.

Which leaves me wondering if there is a desire for more, I don't know, something here. Or maybe the majority like things as they are.

If that's the case, would you kindly spare just a moment to say that you're happy with the comm as it's been for the last few months please? It would help me worry less about trying to think of something. And if there is something you'd like to see or join in with, please let me know that too.

Thanks

Thinking a wee bit ahead, is there something we could do for community-building before Christmas? Or do you all have enough of that going on elsewhere?

It probably doesn't make sense to make it Thai-related. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is anyone in need of some gentle escapism? I recognise pretty much all of the comm members have deep roots in other fandoms and will be seeking the familiar and known but if anyone is looking for something different, I can try to make personalised suggestions. Thai series can have such a gentle way with big emotions and those are the ones I personally value the most. Others are just low-stakes, or it's clear things will work out and the question is how. There are higher stress ones of course, especially those made with an eye to U.S. audiences, but if anyone here needs something with less of that, let me know.

Likewise, if any of you have suggestions for gentle Thai series or such, please share them here too.

Sending love and empathy to everyone in need of it.

Also, is there anything else you'd like to see in the comm? Anything you might participate in?

I noticed some more translated GL novels on Amazon (all of them are on MEB too):

About Galaxy: The Worth of Million Stars by Zezeho (translated by Sweet Bar)

Reverse With Me: Across Millions of Orbits by Zezeho (translated by Sweet Bar)

I think they're all standalone and in the same universe as Reverse 4 You.
